I have been SMU WUSC local committee member since September 2022. My key responsibilities included;

  • Organizing events and activities that promote diversity and inclusion.

  • Helping the new SRP student to settle in Canada.

  • participating in WUSC leadership activities or training.

  • Attending WUSC-related meetings, training, or activities.

  • Taking part in fundraising events that sponsor refugee students to Canada.

I was a pack leader in Fall 2023 at Saint Mary's University. Pack Leaders are volunteers that help welcome and orient new students as they settle at their new home. Key responsibilities;

  • Attending and actively participating in Student Leader Training.

  • Guide students throughout Welcome Weeks and answer fundamental questions about Saint Mary’s student services, facilities, opportunities, and activities.

  • Helping to run events (e.g., facilitating icebreakers, small group activities, set-up and take down).

  • Create an inclusive and welcoming community for all new students.

  • And many more.

I volunteered at SMU East Coast Model UN Conference on Jan 2023 - Apr 2023. I played an essential role in the event by ensuring it runs smoothly and participants are actively engaged. Key responsibilities;

  • logistics handling.

  • Tech support.

  • Event preparation.

  • Welcoming guests and conference participants.

  • decorum check and other duties assigned by the supervisor.

Competencies achieved included;

I) Oral - Organize thoughts and express them clearly in conversations and presentations.

II) Planning, Coordination, & Implementation - Plan and organize work activities of self and others. Manage and coordinate tasks.

III) Equity and Inclusion - Respect everyone's right to express and present themselves according to their religion, culture, ethnic background, sexual orientation, gender-identity, age, and ability.

IV) Strategic Approach - Analyze a situation using a variety of data points to recommend the best action going forward.

3. Conference Volunteer
4. Volunteer Tutor

In the summer of 2023, I was a volunteer tutor for the Somali Association in Nova Scotia. I tutored primary and high school students twice a week. Subjects I tutored include Math and English. The program ran for four months and students were tested at the end.

The aim of the program was to empower students with enhanced academic skills, instill confidence, and bridge educational gaps within the Somali community in Nova Scotia. During the four-month program, my role as a volunteer tutor extended beyond traditional academic support, encompassing a comprehensive approach to learning and personal development.

Key Contributions:

  1. Personalized Instruction: Adapted teaching methods to cater to individual learning styles, fostering an inclusive learning environment.

  2. Interactive Learning: Introduced engaging activities and group exercises to reinforce academic concepts and promote collaboration among students.

  3. Progress Evaluation: Conducted regular assessments to measure academic growth and identify areas needing further attention.

  4. Parental Communication: Maintained open communication with parents, providing updates on students' progress and addressing concerns collaboratively.

5. SMUBSS Event Volunteer

Amongst the societies I volunteered was SMU Biology Society (SMUBS) in 2022. I helped the society in setting things up for events i.e tables and event promotions.

Competencies achieved:

  • Collaboration & Teamwork - Worked seamlessly with society members, fostering a collaborative atmosphere that contributed to the success of events.

  • Creative Thinking - Contributed innovative ideas to enhance event promotions, adding a creative touch to attract participants.

  • Intercultural Skills - Engaged with a variety of individuals, fostering a cross-cultural understanding that enriched the society's dynamics.

  • Networking - Developed a network within the society, establishing valuable connections that contributed to the overall success of events.

  • Planning, Coordination, & Implementation - Spearheaded the planning and coordination of event logistics, ensuring flawless execution from conception to completion.

  • Respectfulness - : Maintained a respectful and considerate approach in all interactions, contributing to a positive and inclusive atmosphere within the society..

6. SAGA Member

SAGA stands for Students Acting for Global Awareness. Is a group of international and Canadian students who organize on- and off-campus events that promote awareness of the different cultures represented at Saint Mary's University. Some of the events held by SAGA are International Night, Movie Nights, Games Nights, and others.

SAGA works closely with the International Student Centre here at SMU to tail around events that are aimed at making students recognize and embrace different cultures and traditions.
